How to Get Medical Marijuana Cards in PA

For patients and caregivers who wish to register in Pennsylvania’s medical marijuana program, this video maybe helpful.

The first step in the registration process is to visit our website at Click on the patients and caregivers link to find helpful information and resources such as the patient and caregiver registry. As you can see here, there are several ways patients and caregivers may register. Adult patients over the age of 18, who wish to receive a medical marijuana identification card, will want to click on Adult Patient Registration. Caregivers will follow slightly different steps, depending on the circumstances of the patient they are providing care for. We’ll go over these steps in separate video.

After you choose the category that best suits your role in the program, you’ll be prompted to enter the information from you valid Pennsylvania driver’s license or state issued ID. You’ll want to have your ID with you so that you can be sure that all of the information that you are entering is exactly as it appears on your ID. If street is spelled out on your license, spell it out but if it’s abbreviated, you’ll need to abbreviate in the registration. If you click submit and receive a message that your information could not be validated, please go back and double check the information. Check the expiration date on your license or ID and make sure that it is not expired. Also, make sure the email address that you use in your registration is unique to you and hasn’t been used by any other patient or caregiver.

After having your state ID or driver’s license information validated, you’ll be asked to create your profile. Choose the user name and password that are easy for you to remember and write them down somewhere safe. Also confirm that the email address that you have entered is correct as that is the email address where you will receive important communications regarding your registration.

After you have successfully registered and created your profile, you’ll see this message reminding you that the next step that you will want to take is to obtain your patient certification from an approved practitioner. As you can see, there are several tabs to choose from depending on what you want to do. This is the home screen.

Now, let’s check out a couple of other tabs that you may find useful. If you click on profile settings, you’ll find your personal information including your patient ID. You can make edits to some of this information such as address, phone number, and email address. Be sure to click save changes when you are finished.

By clicking on the browse physicians tab, you’ll be able to search for a Pennsylvania licensed physician who has completed their training and has been approved by the Department of Health to issue your patient certification. You can search by their last name or you can search with your zip code. Keep in mind that as physicians complete training and are approved by the Department of Health, their names will be added to the registry. So please keep checking back if you have difficulty finding a practitioner.

If an approved practitioner believes that medical marijuana is good treatment option for you, he or she will certify you electronically in the registry system. Then you will receive a email that your certification has been submitted. You can view your patient certification by clicking the patient certifications tab. Now, if you click on the make payment tab before getting your patient certification, you’ll see this screen. Only after being certified by an approved practitioner will you be notified that you can pay for your medical marijuana ID card. Once you are able to make a payment, you’ll see this when you click on the make payment tab. Patients who participate in certain programs can request a fee reduction and will be notified that they can pay the reduced fee once their fee reduction request has been reviewed. Keep in mind, the fee reduction review may take up to a week. If you do not plan to request a fee reduction, simply click pay now.

Lastly, if you are a patient who wishes to designate a caregiver to assist you in obtaining your medical marijuana, you may designate a spouse, a parent or even a trusted friend. Each patient can designate up to two caregivers. Click on the manage caregivers tab to select a caregiver who has all ready registered or to designate someone so that they’ll receive notification that they need to register. Caregivers must register with the Department of Health as well and they’ll need to complete the necessary FBI background check to be approved and to pay for their ID card.

After patients and caregivers pay for their PA medical cards, their card information is then sent to print. Cards are postdated to allow time for processing and mailing so be sure to look at the issue date on the card so you’ll know when you can begin to use it.
